The Journey That Led to My Love for Modern Design

Architecture isn’t just a career for me—it’s in my DNA. Growing up, my world was filled with blueprints, construction sites, and conversations about structure, light, and space. My father, an architect and developer, didn’t just teach me about buildings—he shaped the way I saw the world. While other kids were playing with toy cars, I was sketching floor plans and watching real homes take shape.

Born in Venezuela, raised in Costa Rica, educated in San Francisco, CA, having spent time living in Guatemala, and now calling North Carolina home, I’ve had the privilege of experiencing architecture in wildly different settings. From the lush, tropical designs of Costa Rica to the sleek urban structures of San Francisco, each place left an imprint on my architectural philosophy. And through it all, one style resonated with me above all others—modern architecture.

At Modus Design Build, we don’t just design modern homes because they look sleek. We design them because modern architecture is about innovation, functionality, and a deep understanding of how people truly live in their spaces. It’s about creating homes that aren’t just aesthetically beautiful but also sustainable, efficient, and timeless.

Modern Homes Reflect the Way We Actually Live

Take a moment to think about traditional homes—segmented rooms, small windows, unnecessary walls. These homes were built for a way of life that no longer exists. Modern homes, however, are designed for the present—and the future.

1. Functionality Over Excess

  • I grew up watching my father strip away unnecessary details in his designs, favoring clean lines and intentional spaces.

  • Modern homes embrace a “less is more” philosophy, where every element serves a functional and aesthetic purpose.

  • This results in clutter-free, efficient living spaces that feel timeless rather than trendy.

2. Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Connection

  • In Costa Rica and Guatemala, I lived in homes where nature was an extension of the living space.

  • Modern homes embrace this principle, using large windows, sliding glass doors, and outdoor living spaces.

  • Whether it’s a rooftop terrace, a private courtyard, or a shaded patio, modern design invites the outside world in, creating an unparalleled sense of openness and tranquility.

3. Sustainability & Energy Efficiency

  • I saw firsthand how my father’s projects evolved, integrating eco-friendly materials and smart building techniques.

  • Modern homes are designed to be smarter and more environmentally conscious, with passive solar design, efficient insulation, and renewable energy integration.

  • Quality over quantity is a key principle—modern homes are built to last, not just to follow fleeting trends.

Breaking the Chain: Modern Homes in North Carolina

Let’s be real—North Carolina isn’t exactly known for contemporary homes. The housing market here is dominated by traditional and transitional styles, with their steeply pitched roofs, brick facades, and classic trims. While these styles have their place, they don’t necessarily reflect the future of home design. That’s where we come in.

At Modus Design Build, we’re on a mission to introduce North Carolina to the beauty and intelligence of modern homes. We believe this state is ready for something different—something fresh, sustainable, and truly reflective of how people want to live today.

And believe it or not, North Carolina actually has a hidden treasure trove of modern architecture. The Midcentury Modern movement left a profound mark on the state, particularly in areas like Raleigh and Chapel Hill, where architects such as George Matsumoto and Milton Small created masterpieces that seamlessly blended form and function. These homes were ahead of their time—emphasizing natural light, open spaces, and minimalist aesthetics.

We want to build on that legacy and push the boundaries of what’s possible in North Carolina. Our goal? To break the cycle of conventional design and create homes that stand out not because they’re flashy, but because they’re thoughtfully designed, incredibly functional, and built for the future.

Why Modern Architecture is the Future

I’ve traveled, I’ve studied, and I’ve seen the way architecture evolves. One thing is clear—modern design is not a trend, it’s a movement.

1. Aesthetic Longevity

  • Unlike styles that rely on heavy ornamentation, modern homes stand the test of time with simplicity and proportion.

  • Clean lines and natural materials allow for personalization while maintaining a cohesive and timeless aesthetic.

2. Designed for Contemporary Lifestyles

  • The way people live today has changed—homes need to be flexible, multi-functional, and energy-efficient.

  • Modern design prioritizes open, airy spaces where families can interact seamlessly.

3. Built for Innovation

  • Modern homes embrace smart home systems, advanced building materials, and modular construction techniques.

  • The result is a home that is not only visually stunning but also designed to adapt and evolve with its occupants.
